BIO

Alexandra Panou (GR, 1992) is a costume designer and visual artist. Born and raised in Athens, she studied Theatre Studies at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, focusing on dramaturgy. In 2020 she moved to Belgium, where she pursued a Bachelor’s and later a Master’s degree in Costume Design at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp, graduating in 2024. Her practice lies at the intersection of costume, performance, and installation, with a strong focus on materiality: fabric density, weaving, and texture become structural tools in her process. By combining ready-made objects with crafted pieces, she recontextualizes materials to give them new, paradoxical roles that question social expectations and gender norms. A distinctly feminine perspective informs her work, which frequently engages with questions of identity, power, and social commentary. She has realized independent projects in film and performance and contributed to productions at major institutions, including Toneelhuis, MoMu Antwerp, and the National Opera of Greece. In 2023 she received the ARTOS Incentive Award. She continues to develop a personal artistic language where costume functions not only as an aesthetic layer but also as a performative and critical tool to reimagine bodies, identities, and the stories they carry.
